Vacation can be one of the most challenging times to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Without the stability of a daily routine combined with the feeling of no responsibility or rules it’s easy to rationalize not working out and eating anything you want. For some of those same reasons, vacation time can be the best time to focus on healthy eating and exercise. With no responsibilities and no time limits, vacation provides the flexibility needed to focus on your self. I’m not saying you shouldn’t indulge in vacation’s pleasures, but create a balance to rejuvenate the body. This journal of my own recent experience shows how simple and rewarding it can be to exercise on vacation and I hope it will inspire you!
Day 1
No sleeping in just yet, had to get in a workout before heading to the BCS Championship game and tailgating.
Workout: Total Time 45 minutes
· 30 minute run along the Tempe Canal, beautiful scenery!
· Push-up to core rotation 3 x 14
· Plank 3 x 45 seconds
Day 2
Full day of travel, was up at 5am and landed in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico after 5pm. Considered today my “day off” and took the stairs instead of the escalators!
Day 3
First day to sleep in! Was well rested a ready for a great workout…
Workout: Total Time 60 minutes
· 25 minute run down to the beach, amazing!!!
· Cable Woodchop 3 x 15 each side
· High Row Woodchop 3 x 15 each side
· Plank 3 x 45 seconds
· Machine Lat pull 3 x 20
· Cable/Stability Ball Single Arm Fly 3 x 15 each side
Plus I spent the day shopping, and yes that counts as activity.
Day 4
Up early for a group activity day, but still wanted to get in a workout.
Workout: Total Time 20 minutes
· 20 minute run down to the beach and back, another great start to the day!
Even burned more calories during the group activity day…rode ATV’s, horses and jet skies, so much fun!!!
Day 5
Slept in again and needed to feel bikini ready for a day at the pool.
Workout: Total Time 30 minutes
· Kettle Bell Swings 3 x 30
· Dumb Bell Burpees 3 x 15
· Single Leg Deadlifts 3 x 15 each side
· Floor Core Rotations 3 x 16
Day 6
Another activity day planned, went to check out the Xcaret water park.
Workout: Total Time 25 minutes
· 25 minute run down to the beach, just can’t get enough!
Burned more calories at the water park, spent another 3 hours walking around enjoying all the amusements.
Day 7
Last chance workout before vacation is over and spent the rest of the day pampering myself at the spa with a massage and by the pool.
Workout: Total Time 25 minutes
· 25 minutes of jogging and sprints on the sand
Day 8
Time to travel home and perfect timing for another “day off” for the body to recover. Still took the stairs when the opportunity presented itself.
This was just the break I needed from my usual workout routine. Feeling rested, rejuvenated and ready to get back into the gym as usual.
