Football is back and I couldn’t be more excited! I have visions of tailgates and cozy bars with tons of TV’s dancing through my head. I love this time of year! I can’t wait to rock my green and yellow (Go Ducks!) this coming Saturday for the first time in MONTHS!!! And typical Sunday attire will be red and gold for my original home team, the 49ers, and sometimes Charger blue for my now home team ;)
If you’re a big fan like me then you’ll be spending countless hours in front of the TV every Saturday and Sunday (and Monday), throwing back a few cold drinks and snacking on your favorite game day foods throughout the day. My weekends will start early each morning with a cup of coffee while I scroll my iPad and watch ESPN Game Day or an NFL pregame show.
The excitement, commitments to rally groups, and line up of games make it all to easy for your health to drop on your priority list. As we go into Fall the body is already taking a hit from new pollens in the air and variations in temperature. These small changes can put a little extra stress on the immune system. That topped of with an increase in alcohol consumption and less than healthy foods can equal a recipe for disaster.
Catching a cold, dealing with congestion and allergies, or low energy can put a damper on your game watching days. So here’s my defensive game plan going into football season to boost your immunity and keep you cheering strong all season long:
GAME DAY SURVIVAL TIPS
Choose your alcohol wisely to minimize its impact. Go for gluten free ciders and beers, have your liquor on the rocks or with soda water (not tonic), avoid sugary drinks.
Avoid battered and fried bar foods. Instead opt for; burgers without buns, salads as sides, fresh fish, or even fajita plates without tortillas.
Take a high quality liver support supplement containing milk thistle, glutathione, turmeric and/or N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine.
Bring your own healthy snacks to football gatherings; hummus and veggies, gluten free chips or crackers, dairy free dips like guacamole, and finger food meats like salami and sausages.
Workout in the morning before the games start so you don’t put it off, let’s be real you know it won’t happen later.
MID-WEEK RECOVERY TACTICS
Detox daily with whole organic foods such as raw shredded beets (great for salads and smoothies!), grapefruit (with breakfast or fresh squeezed juice), dandelion greens, and/or fresh lemon (in water or added to foods).
Rest up! Optimal sleep time is from 10pm-6am for the body to fully recover and re-energize.
Take a seasonal immune support supplement containing quercetin for inflammation and allergies, zinc to fight off colds, and stinging nettles leaf that helps to reduce congestion.
Be 100% gluten, dairy, soy, sugar and alcohol free.
Drink A LOT of water to flush out toxins, to thin mucus production and to hydrate going into the weekend.
